Overwatch 2’s Steam launch met with “Overwhelmingly Negative” reviews

Overwatch 2has been available for a while on multiple platforms, though it was in Early Access. With the Invasion update, the game left early access and officially launched on August 10. Reception hasn’t been particularly good, and the game currently sits with“Overwhelmingly Negative” user reviews on Steam. The main reasons for the review bombing relate to how the free-to-play model was implemented, as well as the lack of previously promised content....

PC Port Report: State of Decay

Worth putting up with Every time I play a new zombie game, I think it’ll be the last one I’ll ever enjoy. And then, inevitably, I get invested in certain aspects enough to overlook the same old tropes that have given me such a hyperbolic outlook on the undead’s presence in gaming. That’s what happened withState of Decay, Undead Labs’ open-world survival sandbox game. It’s been available on Xbox Live Arcade since June, but the studio only recently brought the title over to PC by way of a Steam Early Access release....

Prisma is a platformer with hints of Ikaruga

Hands-on As part of theMomoCon Indie Game Award Showcase, three finalists were chosen for a specific “local developer” award, and one of them really stood out to me. Prismamight look like an endless runner at first glance, but it’s actually a fun little platformer with some familiar, but well executed, elements. Over the course of the roughly 15-minute demo, I slowly acquired three core powers, each linked to a different dimension and, conveniently, to a color on the Xbox controller — blue (X, jump), yellow (Y, sprint), and red (B, attack)....

Real Women Play Silent Hill

Surely, you’ve seen the now classic image of a woman watching a horror movie with a man in a darkened theatre — she watches the events on the screen with a pensive expression, sometimes burying her head in her date’s shoulder (and of course the man chuckles and seems to enjoy it). The image is an old one — long perpetrating the idea that women do not like scary things, and in fact need the help of a man to tolerate them....

Relic releases a dev diary for Dawn of War III ahead of its open beta

Time for Waaagh! I get the feeling thatWarhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IIIis going to be divisive to the fan base. A lot of people seem to be complaining about a supposed “dumbing down” of mechanics or how there isn’t anything new on offer. I don’t necessarily agree, but I also wasn’t too impressed with the closed beta I played. If you’re still interested, despite the negative fan feedback, Relic has released a developer diary behind the multiplayer design....

Roy’s not quite our same boy in the new Super Smash Bros.

He’s changed for the better When playingSuper Smash Bros. Melee, I always tended to side with Marth. I dug his aesthetic, his animations, and his moveset over Roy. But with the release of his DLC incarnation in the newSuper Smash Bros., Roy is now my boy. First off, it has to be said that Roy is even less similar to hisFire Emblembrethren in this game. He wields his sword backwards, which provides him with a unique set of animations, as well as different hitboxes for his attacks....

Ruiner is a slick-looking cyberpunk shooter

With music by Susumu Hirasawa Reikon Games is taking us to 2091 with its upcoming top-down action-shooterRuiner, and based on the cyberpunk imagery and snappy combat shown in this trailer, I am down. Where did this come from? It’s being made in Warsaw by folks who previously worked on games likeThe Witcher,Dying Light,This War of Mine, andShadow Warrior. That explains a lot. It’s worth pointing out that you aren’t solely sliding around to shoot dudes (though, again, I am a fan)....

Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One has an elephant going to the gallows

We’ll get him off on appeal In a bizarre twist, Sherlock Holmes finds himself fighting for justice for an elephant. That’s just one of the weird cases waiting inSherlock Holmes: Chapter One. An elephant (who is presumably innocent or at least misunderstood) is sentenced to death by hanging from a crane. Eccentric and horrific, right? That’s some shit they used to do! I didn’t want to start my week by researching pachyderm capital punishment but it happened on accident....

Someone 3D printed a Switch d-pad, but it comes at a price

Scratch marks While I like the Joy-Con remotes for the Nintendo Switch more than a lot of other folks out there, I’m the first to admit that the d-pad (housed on the left Joy-Con) could use some work. Well, any work at all really because it doesn’t exist — you’re left fumbling with four segmented face buttons for the sake of having both of them be symmetrical. Over at Endgadgetthey were able to print out a 3D d-pad overlay which works like a charm....
