Musings on the Persona 5 reveal
Atlus, I applaud you. Even if you’re kind of a jerk. A lovable jerk. People the world over patiently waited for yourNicoNico broadcasttoday. They abided the 72 hour countdown, suffered countlessteaser videos, and stared at the clock as it slowly wound down. Fans pined desperately for a mere glimpse ofPersona 5. And you delivered. But only after trolling your faithful acolytes one last time.
The clockfinallystrikes zero. It’s the middle of the night. Out comes an elderly woman in a pantsuit. Okay, that’s chill. She seems pretty amusing. Heh. Well, that is until she announces footage of a newPersonagame is being shown in the streets of Akihabara below. She blocks the screen, of course, swaying back and forth just enough to let you know it’s there. The snickers of cameramen and production staff can be heard in the background as the tirade grows increasingly lengthy and ridiculous.

At long last the stump speech comes to and end and we see…Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth? Well, that’s certainlydifferent. But I’m sure it will be great. And, after all, the Nintendo 3DS is all the rage in Japan. Then Atlus unveilsPersona 4: Dancing All Night. Okay, that’s kind of weird. Still, I’m totally down.
But where’sPersona 5? Suddenly, “55.555” rolls across the screen. The internet explodes. It’s coming. It’s finally coming. Winter 2014 can’t arrive soon enough.

Can you think of a more manipulative, toying game announcement in recent memory?
