Wants his games to be ‘satisfying,’ not ‘difficult’

Speaking to Metro,Dark Soulsdirector Hidetaka Miyazaki said the reception to the game “was really a huge surprise” and that he “did not expect the success at all.” For better or worse, From Software doesn’t hold your hand; most people I know seem to appreciate being given that level of respect as players.

“I personally want my games to be described as satisfying rather than difficult,” explained Miyazaki. “As a matter of fact, I am aiming at giving players sense of accomplishment in the use of difficulty. Having said that, however, it is true thatDark Soulsis rather difficult and a number of people may hesitate to play.

“This fact is really sad to me and I am thinking about whether I should prepare another difficulty that everyone can complete or carefully send all gamers the messages behind our difficult games,” he continued. “However, I suppose gamers do not particularly prefer easy games. What they want is interesting and worthwhile games to play, so I think it is natural that hindrance or stress that does not attribute to such interesting and worthwhile elements will be removed in the end.”

Would you be okay with an “easy” mode inDark Souls? I have a feeling the consensus for these types of conversations tends to be “So long as it doesn’t diminish the core difficulty or affect me, then sure.” As videogames continue to reach a wider audience, providing choice will become ever more important.
