When I opened up Steam today, I saw that there was aDestiny 2update queued. And that’s the first time I’ve thought about the game in what feels like a long time.

The newEdge of FateDLC is now less than a month from releasing, and I realized that I don’t really feel anything about it. I’m not hyped or concerned, I’m just…indifferent. And many other long-time players are feeling the same way.

Destiny 2 Edge of Fate Hunter

I have thousands of hours logged in the franchise since it launched in 2014. My friends and I played the hell out ofDestinyandDestiny 2, but now many of us are just feeling kind of “meh” about Edge of Fate. Maybe that will change once it’s out, but for now, the excitement is just no longer there.

I’m far from alone in these thoughts, too. My friend group who I played every raid and dungeon with over the years is indifferent. And so are many others, as evidenced by a recent Reddit discussion from June 17.

“I still have no idea if I even care or not,” one playersaidofEdge of Fate. “Nothing from any of the reveals has me interested. I don’t much care for MetroidVania styles of gameplay nor do I care about transforming into a small ball. It’s a ‘wait for reviews and see’ for me.”

Edge of Fateis the beginning of Year of Prophecy forDestiny 2, the latest era in the game after its Light and Darkness Saga, which concluded withThe Final ShapeDLC that launched a year ago. Maybe that has something to do with the lack of anticipation we’re feeling, seeing as the chapter we all played and invested in for years has now closed and this is the beginning of something new.

We finally had that storyline payoff, and now we’re entering uncharted territory. But instead of generating excitement, I think many of us kind of feel exhaustion, even with a new location to explore, a new raid, new characters, and whole new storyline

“I started playing this game a decade ago, a lot of life has happened between those moments,”another gamerremarked. “I’ve never had less time to game than I do now, and I was incredibly excited to see all of the changes to remove power requirements and treadmill from the game withFinal Shape. This new content strategy is moving in the diametric opposite direction with even more focus on your progress and time investment being temporary.”

Edge of Fateis once again overhauling player leveling and armor, making it so the day one experience might feel like a video tutorial is necessary. Maybe this could be a plus? It will scare away others, for sure, having to re-learn everything once more. But also,Edge of Fate’sreveals haven’t shown too much to get all that excited for, so I hope Bungie has some good marketing prepared in the weeks ahead.

My interest inDestiny 2has admittedly been steadily waning over the years, and this is by far the least excited I’ve been for an expansion. Maybe it’s burnout, maybe it’s that I’m getting old, or maybe it’s a combination of several facets, but I’m hoping that things will change.
