While Green Day had been rocking small clubs and pushing its sound grassroots style with Lookout! Records for years, it wasn’t until its major label debut and first single, “Longview,” that the band started to receive worldwide attention.

A catchy tune with a poppy bassline and lyrics about the boredom of suburban life, the song was a hit with disaffected youth and others who couldn’t help but giggle at the word “masturbation.” “Longview” topped the charts, its music video received what seemed like “every fifteen minutes” airplay on MTV, and it earned the band its first Grammy nomination for “Best Hard Rock Performance.”
