The Nintendo Direct program on April 4 has finally given us a confirmed release date for the Nintendo Switch 2, and we have more information about how upgrades will work for first-party titles.

Not all first-party releases will be exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2, as new games will be released for the older Switch console. Thanks to better hardware, Switch 2 users will be able to enjoy enhanced graphics and better controls with the Joy-Con 2. But to do so, they will have to pay an extra price.

How do Nintendo Switch 2 Upgrade Packs work?

Upgrade Packs are an effective way to upgrade your Switch game to the Switch 2 version. When you buy any first-party title’s Switch 2 edition, you’re essentially getting a combo pack of the Switch 1 version and an upgrade pack.

Let’s take the example of the Switch 2 version ofSuper Mario Party Jamboree. This is what you’ll receive:

If you already own the Switch 1 edition for any game, you don’t have to pay the entire amount for the Switch 2 version. Instead, all you have to do is buy the Upgrade Pack, and it should allow you to access the enhanced version of the game.

The exact content of Upgrade Packs will vary across different games, so always make sure to check that out before purchasing a copy (either Physical or Digital).

How much will Nintendo Switch 2 Upgrade Packs cost?

The exact price of the Upgrade Packs is not available as of writing. There’s an exception for a couple ofZeldatitles, but for other games revealed so far, you’ll have to purchase the Upgrade Packs separately. If I have to estimate, the Upgrade Packs should cost around $20.

Most of the base versions for first-party Switch titles cost $59.99. The MSRP forMario Kart Worldis set at $79.99.Mario Kart Worldis one of theseveral launch titlesthat will be available on the same day as the Nintendo Switch 2. A bundle is also available if you are looking to buy the game and the console at a discounted price.

This is why I estimate that the Upgrade Packs will cost about $20, but it’s best to wait for an official report from Nintendo. It’s also important to note that the Upgrade Packs are different from in-game updates. A lot of first and third-party titles will get new gameplay features for the Switch 2, which are going to be available for free. The Upgrade Pack has more to do with the additional features that are only available on the Nintendo Switch 2 (like in-console voice chat, new controllers, and more).

All members of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription will get access to the Upgrade Packs forBreath of the WildandTears of the Kingdomat no extra cost. This benefit is only available for these two Zelda titles, and requires an active membership. The only option for the remaining games is to get the Upgrade Packs separately, or just get a Switch 2 version.
