Much like the fluctuating movie franchise in general,Star Warsvideo games have had their peaks and valleys. After a few positive releases includingJedi: Fallen OrderandSquadrons, I’m cautiously hopeful the upward trend will carry into 2021 withLego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga– and even beyond.
In a blast from the past, the Lucasfilm Games branding is mounting a comeback. Well, kind of.

It’s not the same situation as before Disney came into the picture – Lucasfilm Games won’t suddenly start dreaming up in-houseStar Warsgames like it did decades ago – but the brand is being refreshed.
Going forward, Lucasfilm Games will be the “official identity for all gaming titles from Lucasfilm.”

To be clear, the current strategy is still in effect:Star Warsgames will be “developed in collaboration with the finest studios across the industry.” In other words, EA seemingly isn’t going anywhere. You’ll be able to keep tabs on future Lucasfilm Games happenings onTwitterandFacebook, if you like.
I can’t help but wonder if the smash success ofThe Mandalorianhas opened up any doors – doors that shouldn’t have been closed in the first place – with respect to who can work on what, and when. The sheer potential ofStar Warsin gaming is invigorating and frustrating all at once. It’s beyond untapped.

I’m longing for the days when something likeShadows of the Empirecould get made.
