The LEGO Pokémon sets are real and coming in 2026, leaving many players excited about this new set of collectibles. But there’s one group of fans who are especially disappointed and worried about the future of their collections.

AsPokémonfans prepare for this release, which has already been teased to include a buildable Pikachu, there’s still a lot of speculation about what exactly will be available at launch. While other Nintendo franchises have already hadLEGOsets, includingMarioandZelda, this is the first time inPokémon’s29-year history that LEGO will officially produce sets for the series.

But this also means a fan community that has been growing for the last eight years is likely about to be left empty-handed.

Mattel’s MEGA blocks community worried Pokémon series are over

The MEGAPokémonCollection, which are Pokémon-themed building blocks, is owned by Mattel and has been the only officially licensed Pokémon building block set since 2017, at least until LEGO’s announcement.

Mattel hasn’t revealed any new MEGA Pokémon sets for 2025, even though it was still releasing smaller sets in 2024. Now, with The Pokémon Company’s new LEGO deal, it likely means the end of Mega Pokémon sets, and MEGA collectors are afraid this is true.

“I really don’t know what the future looks like for Mega anymore,” one fan wrote. “This is probably the death knell,” another one added.

Other fans were quick to add that there are cases when a company licenses its brand to competing company, but they don’t sell competing products. For example, you have Mattel making miniature Formula 1 cars while LEGO has Formula 1 building sets.

“Pokémon is MEGA’s biggest license,” a fan explained. “If Lego has successfully stolen it, then MEGA is as good as dead. The brand can’t survive off Hot Wheels.”

This deal doesn’t mean players will never be able to find these Mattel blocks again, but MEGA Pokémon production will likely stop sometime this year. It’s unusual for a company to license its brand to two different companies to produce competing products, so LEGOPokémonwill likely take over.

That’s also likely because thePokémonand LEGO deal didn’t start immediately—meaning the licensing agreement betweenPokémonand Mattel is probably valid until late 2025, when LEGO will actually be able to start creating and releasing its own sets.
